The elementary school situated in the southern periphery of Leipzig will be replaced by a new building on the existing property. The old building will continue to be used until the new construction has been completed. The planning involved a combined school and nursery for 450 students as well as a three-arena sports hall and the corresponding outdoor facilities. As requested by the City of Leipzig a spacious, compact building was developed, which integrates all functional areas (school, nursery and sports halls) into a square structure. The schoolrooms embrace the schoolyard as a central interior space, which enables a visual link to all areas of the schools. Last but not least the compact figure of the building is the main prerequisite for meeting the standards of a passive house, as required by the client.
