Construction at the City Hall Brühl now underway

Following the demolition of an existing building in the city center of Brühl, earth moving is now underway.

The structural work for the extension building including the integrated local district library is scheduled to start this summer directly adjacent the heritage-protected old structure. The adjacent Janshof is also scheduled for redesign. Back in 2017, JSWD Architekten had been awarded first prize in the City of Brühl’s competition. The scheduled new construction will preserve the historical cubature of the traditional city hall while developing from there a local style more or less autonomous building volume consisting of three tightly integrated structures.

Project Launch in Leverkusen: Demolition Party at the Opladen “Bahnstadt”

According to designs submitted by JSWD Architekten, a new urban neigborhood, called “Cube Factory 577”, is underway at the site of the former railroad repair facility at Leverkusen-Opladen.
The design calls for the revitalization of the former repair facility to enhance the development of student and general housing as well as for office use, retail shops and catering establishments at a campus. The central square at the new neighborhood will grow into the attraction for all users.
Additional plans call for various sporting facilities and a new parking garage at the new 21,500 m2 property directly adjacent to campus of the Technical University [TH] Cologne CUBE Real Estate has invested approximately € 88,000,000 in this project.

A recent demolition party marked the start of the construction project. Certain segments of the facades and the roof construction, however, will be left intact. Project completion is scheduled for 2021.

Hybrid.M: Foundation stone ceremony in Munich, Germany

The construction of a pioneering design bus maintenance depot for around 200 vehicles is underway at the approximately 36 hectares piece of land in the Mosach area of Munich. The surrounding area is characterized by the wide thoroughfare of the Georg Brauchle Ring. The objective of the approximately 25 m high office building with the integrated high-rise parking garage is to shield the interior from noise pollution. The new rectangular large-scale design blends well into the surrounding predominantly orthogonal and large-scale structures.
The six-storey new construction along the road runs parallel to the industrial buildings and maneuvering areas of the bus maintenance depot. The hall-like widening of the northwestern corner of the building is the architectural highlight and serves as the address for the new office building. The plan calls for the administrative offices of the bus maintenance depot to be housed on the first and second upper levels. Additional office space above may be made available to third-party tenants. Inside atria and vertical service/ access areas provide structure to the building. Grass will be planted on all roof areas.
The 400 m long scale-like facade “decelerates” the elongated structure. Depending on utilization, the individual building sections will have various facade types of a highly recognizable “family of facades”. For example, the office facade is characterized by diagonally arranged anodized aluminum window elements of various dimensions, which are diagonally offset. The floor-level windows ensure maximum daylight in the interior. Uniformly anodized aluminum frames and the continuous metal ledges reinforce the overall design principle.

Start of construction „Hall 1plus”, Koelnmesse

On 10th of January 2019 the foundation stone of the “Hall 1plus” of the refurbishment of the Exhibition and Convention Center of Cologne has been layed.

JSWD won the competition in 2016. In its effort to attain sustainability, “koelnmesse” calls for an investment of approximately 700 million euros between now and the year 2030. For one, the plans call for the multi-functional “CONFEX-Hall” for exhibitions, conventions and corporate events and an intelligent east-west terminal that links all exhibition areas. Furthermore, a new distinct “Entrance East” will be added to the exhibition complex. The design submitted by JSWD convinced due to its well-thought out organization and rearrangement of the complex, both existing and new pattern of use and developmental structures, which brings the joint flexible use of exhibition halls within the realm of possibilities.

Rehabilitation City of Porz, Germany

By purchasing the long vacant department store in 2014, the City of Cologne assumed a key role in the effort to advance the pending rehabilitation of the city center of Porz.

The Urban Development Corporation moderne stadt had been given the mandate for the creation of a feasibility study, which was being prepared in collaboration with JSWD Architekten. The generally favored concept provided for the demolition of the department store in the pedestrian zone and the urban redesign of the city center by adding three new structures. The interrelationships of the walking public and desired visibility links will be clearly structured in future and will bring to fruition novel retail concepts for the ground floor areas. Apartments are projected for the upper levels. At this time, JSWD is working on the plans for what is known as “Building 1”. Construction is scheduled to get underway during the remainder of 2019.

Bus Terminal at the principal train station of Wuppertal open for Business

Following the inauguration of the Mall adjoining the pedestrian zone toward the principal train station, the adjoining bus terminal has now started operations.

It is designed for 35 bus lines to converge at the newly structured transfer point of the ÖPNV. The principal developers, the WSW, estimate up to 65,000 passengers will use the bus terminal daily. It is estimated that approximately one third of them will transfer to other bus lines, the suspension monorail or the German railroad.
The bus terminal represents the final component of the urban redesign and the structural design of the overall railroad station area. The entire area has been enriched by an attractive urban addition in the city center, a concept developed and realized by JSWD.

Moxy Hotel at the Cologne/Bonn Airport

JSWD has been working on behalf of Art-Invest on the construction of a new hotel within the Domestic area of the Konrad Adenauer Airport near Cologne.

The pentagonal base design and the facade somehow borrow from the architectural styling of the terminal built in 1970 by Prof. Schneider v. Esleben; the current design, however, stops short of copying it. Approximately 250 guest rooms are distributed across four building levels. The lobby, a restaurant and the roof terrace are situated on the fifth floor. The upper levels permit direct view toward the activities on the runway and tarmac.
The inauguration of this hotel, which is part of the Marriott Group, is projected for 2021.

Exhibition “Waidblicke 3” at the showroom of smow in Cologne

New Schwarz-Project-Campus, Bad Friedrichshall

The layout of the Project-Campus Bad Friedrichshall is simiar to giant petals being placed in the distinct topography of the landscape.

Notwithstanding the solitary impression the individual structures convey, they are positioned to encircle a common central green area. Staggered to resemble a terrace, the parking garage levels - some of which open toward the valley - are the base for the high-rise structures.
The positioning of the buildings with their rounded corners results in typical reception bays - each one destined to serve a specific purpose viz. as main entrance, service access or staff entrance - and each is assigned unmistakable and attractive priorities. The main entrance provides access to the conference facilities and the employee cafeteria. The current plans call for the realization of the first construction phase (approx. 3,000 jobs) of the state of the art campus toward the middle of the next decade.

DGNB Platin for the office building “Europe Plaza” in Stuttgart, Germany

The project just was awarded with the plantin certificate of the German Sustainable Building Council e.V [DGNB].

The Europe Plaza office and business complex is situated almost opposite the "Library of the 21st Century" in the Stuttgart 21 redeveloped quarter. Following a three-stage competition in 2008, the judges voted for the design by JSWD Architects.
A lively city quarter characterized by trade and catering sections as well as freely customizable office space in the upper floors will be created here. A courtyard across two levels forms the core of the building. At "Stockholmer Platz" and opposite "Londoner Straße" the volume of the building in the lower two floors is reduced.

The Sky is the Limit at the City of Bonn’s “Neue Kanzlerplatz”

Rising to 28 floors, the high point of the building ensemble designed by JSWD Architekten is almost as high as the neighboring “Lange Eugen” [Tall Eugene], the former House of Representatives, which reaches to 114 m.

With this, the new tower ranks number three in the hierarchy of Bonn’s high-rise buildings. At the top of the list is the Post Tower (Helmut Jahn) at 163 m.
Three office buildings of differing elevations, all designed with pentagonal floor plans, will in future surround the new municipal square. The building ensemble blends in well with the urban environment.
The inner-city landmark of the former “Bonn Center” dating back to the 1960s, had been demolished as far back as March of 2017. The structural work is scheduled to begin in early 2019. Meanwhile, the preparation of the 12 m deep excavation is being prepared. The completion is scheduled for 2021. The German Postbank will be the principal tenant of the 40,000 m2 floor space.

At the ground level, an integral artistic concept forms the corners of the two facing buildings.

The artist Annette Sauermann designed a light installation, which on the one hand symbolizes the shared identity of the two institutes but at the same time their independence. With this in mind, white rounded lines on black background characterize the light module of the IPT while straight perspective red lines on white make up that of the ILT. Using computer-controlled input of different impulses, the light lines (LED) symbolize the internal activities of the institutes in abstract form.

Modell for the “Museum of Silence” in Berlin, Germany

At the “Museum of Silence” in Berlin, a new addition is being celebrated today: The model presented features the “Room of Silence” as had been realized previously at the Forum Q2 of the ThyssenKrupp Quarters in Essen.

The two architectural firms JSWD Architekten of Cologne and Chaix & Morel et Associés of Paris had the idea of the entrepreneur campus conceived and realized for this thought provoking location. In the seven meter high sparsely illuminated room, the suspended cube beckons the visitor opening up the view into its colorfully illuminated interior and inside walls lined with spliced titanium shingles.

The “Museum of Silence” represents a private initiative by the artist Nikolai Marakov. In addition to his own large-format art representing vague cloud and landscape fragments, there is a permanent exhibition of models by additional architects - among them Volker Staab and Sergei Tchoban.

Neue „Stadtloggia“ im Kölner Süden: 1. Preis Bezirksrathaus Rodenkirchen

The business center “The Icon Vienna” is growing taller and taller …

Directly adjacent to the Vienna Main Railroad Station on a triangular property, the shell of the business center The Icon Vienna is growing taller and taller.

Now it was time to proceed with the "topping out ceremony” (Dachgleiche) meaning the reinforced concrete cover for the highest of the three towers had been poured.
The design by JSWD originated at the International Architectural Design Competition in partnership with BEHF Architects of Vienna. Three towers in the form of smooth rocks, each rising to a different height, are linked at the base by a covered shopping arcade, which gives the new urban quarter its distinct character. The public shopping arcade accommodates and channels the visitors thus adopting a steering function between the First Campus, the Belvedere Quartier and the new railroad station.

The plans call for a globally unique permanent Wallpaper Collection at the Brüder-Grimm Square at the Kassel MuseumQuarter. The design submitted by JSWD Architekten was awarded the 2nd prize.

The proposed new structure is destined to become the distinguishing structure at the square periphery. The adjacent heritage-protected Torwache will be integrated into the museum, but will nevertheless remain the independent principal feature toward the Wilhelmshöher Allee. The staircase at the connecting structure, which dates back to the 1950s, will act as the link.  Deliberate material selection and formal simplicity make it possible to connect two solitary buildings into an impressive whole.

Ausstellungsdauer:  28.11 2017 – 12.01.2018

Exhibition "JSWD - hautnah" at RIBA, London

The portfolio of JSWD Architekten of Cologne reveals a wide range of diverse construction projects. Many projects have resulted from successful participation in competitions.  We take pleasure in supporting construction projects from very large to very small. The projects vary in magnitude, focus and client. It is nevertheless a common thread that runs through most of the already completed projects and those now underway: particular attention to the exterior, which is meant to be not merely a special attention getter for the onlooker, but should also tell the story of the structure and its owner. In addition to the ties to the locale, which are considered important, the focus is above all on building utilization and the philosophy of the client. The façades move the interior outward, but relate to the environment equally. The “skin” of a building by JSWD is not fashionable. Rather it strives toward civil engineering quality and design sustainability. The inherent design quality, resulting from the combination of conceptual clarity and the conservative use of formal means, has frequently found favor in the rest of Europe. Increasingly the firm JSWD Architekten has undertaken planning and execution of projects beyond Germany. With the display of schematic views of sectional building shells the current exhibit portrays important JSWD Architekten projects spanning the entire spectrum - in other words, JSWD close up!

Exhibition "architectdocuments 4" in Kassel, Germany

Vom 10.

Juni 2017, 18 Uhr

Book "Portfolio" of JSWD is published from Jovis

"The Cologne architecture firm JSWD demonstrates the long-term benefits of an international presence. JSWD Architekten are currently involved in major projects in Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria, in some cases with European partners. An understanding of building quality, urban design, and competence in the field of sustainable construction are always central aspects of these. JSWD are involved in a wide range of building projects—from a school to a research institute, from a residential building to a museum—and each project is conceived from scratch. “Architecture and urban development have to reflect diversity”—this credo underpins the designs by JSWD. They have shown on many occasions that they are not afraid of size, nor do they have any reserve about designing the smallest of details within their particular context. The common feature of all their work is the search for homogeneity with regard to the building volume, form, materials, and color. This harmonious architecture by JSWD is therefore multifaceted and coherent at the same time."
