Competition New Academy Building at UKSH Kiel
The 2-phase competition for the new construction of an academy building, an administration building and a parking garage was recently decided. According to our conception, three new buildings form an inviting ensemble on the hillside with the listed Gropius buildings. The central, cubic academy building is conceived as an open learning landscape. In front of it is the newly designed Gropiusplatz, which becomes the address at the Schlosspark and in the direction of the Kiel Fjord.
Ceramic modules with integrated photovoltaics are planned for the facade.

A reflecting labyrinth at the New Chancellor Square in Bonn
This year our project "Neuer Kanzlerplatz" for Art-Invest was completed. The high point completes the office quarter and enriches Bonn with a new landmark. On the central square between the three buildings, the walk-in sculpture "Mirror Pavilion" by Danish artist Jeppe Hein has now been presented to the public. The artist drew inspiration for the diamond shape of the reflecting columns from the geometry of the façade structure designed by JSWD, among other things.
The passageway through the building ensemble leads pedestrians from all directions directly into the labyrinth. The reflections offer an exciting interplay between one's own image and the surrounding architecture.
Present at the ceremony, in addition to the artist Jeppe Hein, were Bonn's Mayor Gabi Mayer, the art professor and curator Dr. Florian Matzner (ADBK Munich) and Arne Hilbert, Managing Director at Art-Invest Real Estate.
Closing the gap in Düsseldorf
The foundation stone was laid less than 10 months ago, and now the topping-out ceremony has taken place in downtown Düsseldorf. We designed the up to six-story office building with an X-shaped floor plan for Becken Development GmbH. It closes a gap in a central location near the popular Königsallee and creates space for high-quality and flexible working environments.
At the topping-out ceremony, Jens Hogekamp, Managing Director of Becken Development und Asset Management GmbH, said the project was an example of the consistent implementation of sustainability criteria in project developments and revitalizations.
District Mayor Dietmar Wolf highlighted the high energy efficiency, the infrastructure for e-vehicles and the photovoltaic system. Fittingly: The announced gold certification of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
Keynote by Tobias Unterberg
The motto of this year's lecture series is "Transformative Architecture - the future of building".
Our Associate Partner Tobias Unterberg was part of the panel in Hannover on September 6.
This is what the organizer writes: "Architecture plays a crucial role in shaping our living spaces, workplaces and our interaction with the environment. Environmental, economic and social demands are consciously and profoundly changing, and with them the nature of architecture. What remains is constant change.
As players in the construction industry, we have the opportunity to play a leading role in promoting sustainable, resource-efficient and climate-friendly construction methods. With the ROMA Tour 2023, we aim to explore the latest innovations, sustainable practices and pioneering technologies that are revolutionizing construction"
Program ROMA Campus 2023
Sustainable building: JSWD is committed to educating developers about opportunities and ways to achieve sustainability goals in all new projects. Together, the Phase Sustainability objectives are to be integrated into the project's own individual goals: saving resources, avoiding CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle, using renewable building materials and much more.
Thanks to the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling), we are able to map the effects of different construction and material variants. Links to official databases mean that BIM can provide us with information on material-specific CO2 emissions or quality as a CO2 sink, for example.
Phase Sustainability is a joint initiative of the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) and the Federal Chamber of German Architects (BAK).
Mention for JSWD
The new building will form the prelude to the "Campus West" and create clear spatial edges to the adjacent urban spaces. A high point marks the main entrance, visible from afar. The building combines workshop, laboratories, library and seminar rooms under one roof. A green inner courtyard provides views of the experimental hall, among other things. Rooms with a high noise potential are located in the basement, which is pushed into the slope. The compactness of the design allows for short distances and a high degree of internal communication.
In the spirit of corporate architecture, the facade is made of recycled metal sheets. In addition to the solar control effect, it contains ventilation elements that allow cooling without opening windows and thus contribute to sound insulation. This shell is also low-maintenance and can be deconstructed and reused in line with the cradle-to-cradle principle.

JSWD wins the competition
All-rounder on the Elbe islands: We are pleased about the acceptance of our solution for this future-oriented task. The flowing and organic architecture of our compact ensemble of bus depot and commercial building fits naturally into the urban context. By staggering the floors between the two units, terraces with green open spaces and a view of the harbor are created. At the same time, an inviting gesture is created in the direction of the S-Bahn platform. The Hamburger Hochbahn, as the awarding authority, has given the ensemble the title "Zusammenhub" in keeping with its integrative function.
Efficient: Thanks to the first multi-story bus parking facility in Germany, the otherwise usual space consumption is halved. In general, sustainability is the order of the day at the new mobility hub: Recycled concrete and aluminum are used according to the "cradle to cradle" principle. Heat pumps are at the heart of the heating and cooling system. Waste heat from the charging technology is also used. Photovoltaic systems on the roofs provide green electricity. Material consumption and transport movements are minimized by the fact that most of the construction is prefabricated or semi-prefabricated.

In the popular district of Zollstock in Cologne, JSWD is planning a green shimmering residential building called "Zoll 5" for CUBE Real Estate.
The new building offers final space for 100 micro apartments and 14 units for shared apartments. Moderate redensification will create demand-oriented and high-quality living space.
The building application has just been submitted to the City of Cologne. Construction is scheduled to start in 2024.
JSWD opens its office doors at the river Spree.
Every year, on the last weekend in June, the Day of Architecture takes place throughout Germany. The open architecture offices allow interested visitors to look behind the "scenes" of their work and often open their office doors in combination with a program supplemented by lectures, exhibitions and discussions.
On the Day of Architecture in Berlin, there are about 100 venues on the program. Alone 31 offices for architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and urban planning open their doors and invite visitors.
At JSWD, the door is open on Saturday, June 24 from 11 am to 6 pm. We look forward to your visit!

New-build preferred
Last week, the city council of Dortmund voted with an overwhelming majority for a bill clearly giving preference to rebuilding the local Schauspielhaus theatre, rather than renovating it. JSWD generated a feasibility study for the city of Dortmund, assessing both options. The result: reconstruction is urgently recommended. The reasons for this include the greater flexibility of usage offered by a stage set in the round, alongside the synergies achieved by carrying out the work in parallel with the rebuilding of the Junge Bühne Dortmund, with which the Schauspielhaus will share a foyer.
The preference for rebuilding brings us one step closer to the creation of a new urban destination in this structural ensemble, including the Schauspielhaus alongside the Junge Bühne, itself planned by JSWD, whose striking cubic structure stands out above the cityscape. We look forward to the next stages and thank Theater Dortmund for their excellent collaboration!
Corporate architecture in bright red.
Our design for the new fire and rescue station in Dülmen focuses on formal clarity as well as on materials from the region and picks up on the typical regional construction methods. Green roofs and efficient building technology in line with the low-tech concept ensure reduced energy requirements. In the competition our contribution was awarded a great 2nd prize. We are very pleased and congratulate the first place winner Büro tr architekten. A negotiation procedure will follow.
The jury for the above-mentioned competition met on May 23, 2022 under the chairmanship of Mr. Franz-Jörg Feja and awarded three prizes and three recognitions. The press conference with simultaneous opening of the exhibition of all award-winning works took place on May 31, 2023 at 11:00 am.

The building application for the Vergé House has been approved.
Apartments suitable for the elderly and, on the first floor, a commercial and service offer especially for senior citizens - this is what the last building block in Greencity Zurich will offer in the future. The sustainable urban quarter, which will be realized according to the goals of the 2000-watt society, is located on the outskirts of the city on a former industrial site not far from Lake Zurich. JSWD designed the new building for construction site B6 there for the general contractor Losinger Marazzi AG. Loggias, a light-flooded inner courtyard and an attic indented on the courtyard side provide bright apartments. Offices are located on the 1st floor. The concrete skeleton construction with low concrete requirement as well as the planned wooden facade are factors for the intended certification according to SNBS (Standard Sustainable Building Switzerland) in gold.
The building application for the Vergé House with its 179 residential units has now been approved.
Event with the BDA Bonn-Rhein-Sieg
Even before the official opening of the office quarter, a selected audience was offered the opportunity to visit the offices, coworking spaces and meeting and event rooms of Design Offices. The first floor with the main foyer of the high-rise building and the top floor on level 27 were accessible, from where the view extends to the Siebengebirge and as far as Cologne.
Initiated by real estate developer Dr. Ronald Münzer (XING Ambassador Community Bonn) and the BDA Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, the event featured keynote speeches by Mario Pirwitz (Associate Partner at JSWD) and Thomas Leise (Project Manager at Art-Invest Real Estate).
The event, including a concluding panel discussion, was moderated by Frank Überall, Head of the German Journalists' Association.

With light installation at two Fraunhofer Institutes ILT and IPT in Aachen
Important artists have been creating art on buildings in Germany for decades on behalf of the state. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) is presenting many works in the traveling exhibition "70 Jahre kunst am Bau /70 Years of Art on Buildings in Germany".
Among other things, the light installation on the facades of the neighboring Fraunhofer Institutes for Laser Technology (ILT) and for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen will be on display. JSWD designed the extensions for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The ideas of artist Annette Sauermann were integrated into the planning as early as possible. More than 7,000 LEDs animated her graphics, which were printed on the glass surfaces at the opposite corners of the building. The colorful, partly linear and partly curved lines not only glow in the dark, but also impress during the day with changing images and reflections. Their pulsation mirrors the beat of the data traffic of both institutes in an abstracted form. In this way, the "network of knowledge" that matures behind the facades is brought to the outside and made tangible for the public.

Article in the current issue of wettbewerbe aktuell
In the current issue of the magazine wettbewerbe aktuell the series "Time Travel" looks back to our competition success in 2000 - the 1st prize for the design of the new ICE-Terminal Köln-Messe/Deutz.
This competition was, so to speak, the birth of JSWD - the merger of Jaspert & Steffens Architekten and WJD Architekten.
Unfortunately, the project was not realized. Only the historic entrance building was renovated and redesigned by JSWD.
Sustainability and the economy of means
Sustainable construction is on everyone's lips. Familiar structures, ways of thinking and building production in general need to be questioned and rethought at all levels and scales. What makes cities, neighborhoods and their buildings truly sustainable? What is the significance of their adaptability to new usage requirements? For example, are new office buildings still needed at all, and if so, how do you design them to be attractive(er) to attract new employees?
At JSWD, the planning process for its own projects is based on a lively culture of discussion that generates a range of possibilities - always with the adage of optimal "economy of means."
In today's episode of "JUNG Architecture Talks", our Associate Partners Tobias Unterberg and Christian Mammel discuss with Dijane Slavic and Wiebke Becker.

Impulse lecture "from 0 to 100 - genesis of a high-rise"
On the initiative of the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia, about 25 students and graduates of architecture courses as well as new chamber members visited us at our Cologne location. The group was accompanied by Maria Jourlova-Nordmeyer and Christof Rose from the AKNW.
During a tour of our working environment, the competition department including the model-making studio attracted particular interest. The subsequent impulse lecture by the JSWD team offered the participants exciting insights into the planning process of a major project - from the first stroke in the competition to the further planning and realization.
During the concluding drink, further questions could be addressed to the JSWD team.
Our conclusion: An all-around successful event format! Thanks to the AKNW!
Sustainable building sets standards throughout Europe.
At 110 meters and 26 stories above ground, our project in the state capital is currently the tallest timber hybrid high-rise building in Europe currently in planning. Sustainable office space will be created on a prestigious site close to the Rhine in Düsseldorf's government district. Our design proposes a green ensemble consisting of a high-rise building and an atrium building. A special highlight are the so-called "Harold Terraces". From the building base, which is staggered back, a topography with great recreational qualities develops. These green spaces also provide a venue for public events when needed.
In October 2021, the competition in which we participated in consortium with Gina Barcelona Architects was decided in our favor. We are continuing this successful collaboration.

JSWD plans new building for Kepler University Hospital
With an integrated concept for the new building of the pediatric clinic as well as a central company kitchen at the Kepler University Hospital (KUK) in Linz, JSWD has won the current planning competition. With this success, JSWD consolidates its position as a hospital planner and confirms the foundation of JSWD Healthcare GmbH.
The new building is designed to meet the special needs of young patients and create optimal conditions for their care. Spacious areas for play, opportunities for retreat, and a building structure that allows plenty of light will make the children's stay as comfortable as possible. In addition, ample visitation opportunities are created for loved ones.
Our comb-like long building with accompanying magistrale will complete the center of the campus in the future. The two-story base of the new clinic building will be clad in natural stone. Above the base is a technical floor and above that, on three floors, the nursing wards. Their facade panels with green glazed wood panels harmonize in color with the existing buildings.
The project is scheduled to go into operation in 2030.

A team of planners led by JSWD is creating the master plan.
In the future, the Bamberg Clinic is to be expanded into a healthcare campus at the Bruderwald site. This "one-site concept" is intended to future-proof the region's health care. The master plan in question was developed by JSWD in cooperation with the offices of BFS+ GmbH from Bamberg and Team 4 from Nuremberg and was presented to the Bamberg Building and Works Senate on December 7.
"With the site expansion of the hospital, the health city of Bamberg continues to gain profile," emphasizes Mayor Andreas Starke. He speaks of a "forward-looking step that is of great significance for the entire region."
The expansion of the site will take place in stages. The expansion will start in 2024 with the planning of new premises for psychiatry. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
Second JSWD building block for koelnmesse 3.0
In the presence of Mona Neubaur, NRW Minister of Economic Affairs, Lord Mayor Henriette Reker and Exhibition Director Gerald Böse, the topping-out ceremony for the multifunctional congress building called Confex® was celebrated today.
As part of the "koelnmesse 3.0" investment program, the first step was the replacement of Hall 1. Confex® will now be built on its former site by 2024. Its cubature will fit harmoniously into the ensemble of the inner-city trade fair site and, together with Hall 1, will then form the structural conclusion to the adjacent Rhine Park to the west. Thanks to the flexible use of its conference rooms of different sizes and the combination with the neighboring Hall 1, Confex® will enable a combination of trade fair, congress and event in the future and offer space for up to 6,000 visitors.

Connective office worlds behind a curved façade
For Becken Development GmbH, we are planning the project called CURVE in Düsseldorf's city centre with approx. 10,800 m² of rental space. The building project completes the existing building ensemble of the building block and forms a new address in the quarter with its triangular forecourt facing Helmholtzstraße. In the new building, which is not only curved on the street side, a future-oriented working environment is created on a cross-shaped floor plan. Gold certification by the DGNB and WiredScore are the desired standard.
Construction of the excavation pit on the 4,000 m² building site began at the end of 2021. Today, the foundation stone for the new building, which will later glow red, is being laid.

JSWD wins 2nd prize.
The planned Center for Science and Society is a key architectural project of the University of Konstanz. The state of Baden-Württemberg had launched a planning competition for this purpose. At the end of September, the competition for the new forum, which will form the center of the campus in the future, was decided. A total of 21 architectural firms took part. JSWD's concept was awarded 2nd prize by the jury. We congratulate the first-place winner, Code Unique from Dresden.
Study on safety at train stations published
JSWD's concept for the redesign and reorganization of the station area at Döppersberg is a success!
The just published study uses our project as a positive example for a successful transformation of an urban space that for a long time topped the list of places marked as "significantly fearful" in the city's fear space concept. A new business bridge as a pedestrian connection between the main train station and the city center now ends at the attractive station forecourt. From there, citizens enter the daylight-flooded entrance mall with stairways to the tracks and the bus station, which has also been redesigned. Now the urban space is characterized by an increased quality of stay with a variety of possible uses and a demonstrable improvement in the feeling of safety.

Senior living instead of offices
Building site B6 is the last undeveloped plot of land in the so-called Greencity. In order to ensure its socially and urbanistically sustainable development, the design plan was partially revised at the beginning of the year. The reason is a change in the initial situation: The use was previously limited to services and commerce, which, according to the city, no longer meets the needs of the neighborhood and the economy. Therefore, in addition to the previous commercial and service use, apartments for the elderly, care and educational facilities are also to be possible on construction site B6 (planning: JSWD). The change of use creates new qualities for the entire neighborhood and enables a broader range of offers in the Manegg.
Greencity is a project by Losinger Marazzi. On the 8-hectare former Sihlpapier site in the Manegg district, a sustainable urban quarter has been under construction since 2015.

Restructuring of Wendersplatz in Neuss
The city of Neuss presents the result of the ideas workshop "Neuss Wendersplatz - Der Heimat einen Hafen geben" (Neuss Wendersplatz - Giving Home a Port) and thus our design at the trade fair for urban and project development. JSWD cooperated with LAND Germany and the traffic planners of BSV. We were looking for a concept for the design and future use of the Wendersplatz as a central element of the city. The 5 hectare site on the edge of the city center of Neuss is to be used for a multifunctional purpose that attracts a large number of visitors.
On this page, the city of Neuss publishes the facts about the workshop process as well as the site plan and model photos of our concept.

Lively urban quarter in the city center
Due to the many changes in the center of the city of St. Augustin on the right bank of the Rhine, the best possible development and utilization concept was sought for the area between Rathausallee and the site of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. The 13-hectare site is to be developed in an urban and architecturally high-quality manner with an attractive mix of uses including housing, hotel, offices, research facilities and gastronomy.
JSWD applied with the project developer DUDOQ Real Estate and was awarded the contract for further planning. On April 5, the concept was presented to the St. Augustin Urban Development Committee.
Postbank has already moved in.
Two buildings have already been completed in the new office quarter. The partners and associate partners of JSWD (from left: Konstantin Jaspert, Frederik Jaspert, Olaf Drehsen, Tobias Unterberg, Mario Pirwitz, Christian Mammel, Jürgen Steffens) saw for themselves the progress of construction of the high-rise building and also took a look at the two 5-6-story buildings for Postbank. As the main tenant, it is moving its nine previous Bonn locations together here. In the end, Postbank will occupy 40,000 sqm, Postbank will occupy 2/3 of the available rental space in the three base buildings of the Stadtquartier.
In the high-rise building with a final height of 101.5 meters, future-oriented office worlds will also be created on 28 floors. In addition to individual offices, there will also be work lofts and variable project offices for corporate and private use.
There will also be a gastronomic offering in the Quarter. The new urban quarter replaces the 18-story Bonn Center, which disappeared from Bonn's cityscape in 2017 in a controlled demolition after 48 years.

Fusing conferences and exhibitions along with the desire to stage topics with a more intensive variety of experiences as well as the possible hybrid trade fairs with digital recordingare becoming reality at Confex®. This will increase Koelnmesse's convention capacity by a further 5,500 participants. Flexible use of the conference rooms different in size and the combination with the new Hall 1 provide it with answers to requests for direct combinations of trade fairs, conventions and events and thus space for new trade fair formats. The central city location and functionality of the ensemble consisting of Confex® and Hall 1 will distinguish Cologne and only be feasible in this form with Koelnmesse.
The foundation stone for the new Confex® was laid in August 2021, with completion scheduled for mid-2024.

Gold for our „New Kesselhaus“ in Gelsenkirchen

The German Design Awards have been presented by the German Design Council for the tenth time. The internationally renowned prizes are awarded to companies whose pioneering products and projects stand out in the categories of “Excellent Product Design”, “Excellent Communications Design” and “Excellent Architecture”.
JSWD was awarded “Gold” in the category Excellent Architecture for the “Neue Kesselhaus” on the Nordstern office campus. The rust-red longhouse replaces the lost boiler house of the coal mine, which was shut down in 1993, and is seen as a natural part of the revitalisation process. Two bridges link the new building with the existing structure, and and all levels are flooded with air.
“Coal mining is inextricably linked to the history and culture of Gelsenkirchen. With the closure of numerous mines, an important piece of cultural history was in danger of being lost. The design for the conversion of the coal mine, which was shut down in 1993, into the ‘Nordstern-Bürocampus’ in Gelsenkirchen is a powerful counterweight to this. The project also includes the construction of a new 126 m long building to replace the boiler house that was lost during the decommissioning. It is remarkable how harmoniously the building fits into the ensemble with its rust-red colour and formally clear, functional shape, which consistently follows the historical industrial architectural style of the existing buildings on the site. Beautiful details such as the bridges to adjacent levels and the level in the building’s architecture reminiscent of coal beds, reinforce the overall harmonious impression,” was the jury’s reasoning for awarding the highest distinction.

Sleep well at Cologne Airport
JSWD has been working on behalf of Art-Invest on the construction of a new hotel within the domestic flight area of the Konrad Adenauer Airport near Cologne. The pentagonal base design and the façade somehow borrow from the architectural styling of the terminal built in 1970 by Prof. Schneider v. Esleben; the current design, however, stops short of copying it. Approximately 250 guest rooms are distributed across four building levels. The lobby, a restaurant and the roof terrace are situated on the fifth floor. The upper levels permit a direct view toward the activities on the runway and tarmac.

New complex for the Ministry of Finance of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany)
At the beginning of October 2021, we could win this important competition in which we cooperated with Gina Barcelona Architects.
New office space for the Ministry of Finance and two additional users is planned on a prestigious site close to the Rhine in the government district of Düsseldorf. In addition, areas for shared services, gastronomy and a library will be provided.
Our design proposes a staggered, green ensemble of a high-rise and an atrium building. The so-called "Harold terraces" are a special highlight. Staggered back from the base, a terraced and greened topography with great amenity qualities hosts the possibility of various open-air formats. Together with the adjacent area of the "Harold Bay", a generous public space is created that completes the so-called "blue green ring" on its south side.
The sustainable façades have numerous features for CO2 reduction and generation of solar energy. Its horizontal structure gives the complex a bright and modern appearance.
Jury statement:
"The proposal consistently bases itself on the result of the previous urban masterplan competition." The sculptural approach is implemented in a very independent way. In particular, the terraces facing Haroldstraße flow harmoniously into the green space of Harold's Bay to the north.” The roof garden was also positively mentioned: "At a height of over 8 metres, it creates a beautiful upper ending, both formally and functionally. Due to the back-stepping technical spaces, even covered outdoor areas are provided."

The building shell of the high rise is complete now.
The focus of the design of JSWD is on high-end attractive architecture that also offers urban and functional quality. Three office buildings of differing elevations, all designed with pentagonal floor plans, will in future surround the new municipal square. The high point is the tower with more than 100 meters height.
The completion of the inner-city office quarter is scheduled for 2022.
JSWD in cooperation with LAND Germany and BSV
Exhibition at Architektur Galerie Berlin until 20th of November
JSWD’s portfolio ranges from corporate headquarters to single-family homes, from school buildings to high-rises, from urban redevelopment to the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. The aim in each case is to find the perfect solution, whether for three people or for three thousand.
The exhibition All Scales addresses the various dimensions in JSWD’s oeuvre and the related question of how much diversity an architectural practice of this size can and must deal with today in order to be successful in the balancing act of economy and design. JSWD’s dedicated exploration of these poles is illustrated by the kiosk, which is installed in the gallery as an experimental platform of visual impulses. Challenging standard architectural communication, it offers low-threshold access to buildings and projects through formats such as postcards, newspapers, notices, posters, souvenirs, and food and drink. The combination of the small kiosk, which is of systemic importance in Cologne and beyond, with complex architectural information, transforms the gallery into a temporary backdrop for the informal and commonplace – seeking the greatest possible contrast to the white cube. Last but not least, the installation pays tribute to an indispensable building block of the urban landscape.

Now in its 18th year, The International Architecture Awards are the oldest and most prestigious distinguished international building awards program that honors new and cutting-edge design worldwide. This annual program, organized by both our institutions, also promotes international architecture and design to our public audience globally. This year, the Museum received a record number of projects for new buildings, landscape architecture, and urban planning from the most important firms practicing globally.
Also the exhibition “The City and the World” will be opened at The Contemporary Space Athens and will show the winning project. The exhibition is scheduled to travel in Europe through 2022.
This project has been the result of a cooperation with Chaix & Morel et Associés, Paris, France.
First construction section is completed.
The aim of the new building is to consolidate three facilities with locations currently distributed around the city to one common property. The new building is intended to enable functional processes to be optimized and synergy effects to be achieved by sharing company facilities. The clear and expandable building structure reflects the different uses as a matter of course and can react flexibly to changing requirements if required. In addition to an administration building with a publicly accessible customer area, the facility includes various garages, storage and workshop areas. The structures line up from east to west along an access main line. The individual areas of use are accessed from this via spur streets. A fence and an outer green belt encompasses the planned structures and result in a noticeable unity.
The WAS (Wolfsburger Abfallwirtschaft und Straßenreinigung) facility is given its individual identity through a uniform color and material concept for all buildings. The vertical and, as it were, filigree structure of the facade made of irregularly folded sheet metal pilasters creates an attractive plasticity. The facade image of vertical pilaster strips, window areas and gate entrances depicts the use of the respective building. The galvanized facade panels and the external sun protection of the administration give the buildings a changing appearance depending on the weather and daylight.

JSWD’s material concept is based on the existing buildings. The uniform, flat-format bricks used on the new building facade and the minimal roof covering demonstrate a deliberate detail reduction. The scaly arrangement of the bricks reinterprets the clapboard formwork.

"Clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, medical centers, sanatoriums
Architecture and interior design: Germany, Austria, Switzerland
The demand for health care in the hospital sector is constantly increasing. As a result, the architecture of hospitals continues to gain in importance. It should actively promote the well-being of patients by designing everything from open reception areas to relaxation and private retreats. The book “Krankenhäuser, Kliniken, Gesundheitszentren, Spitäler, Rehazentren, Ärztehäuser, Sanatorien” shows a variety of different hospital buildings from modern new buildings to historical, partly listed currently modernized buildings. In addition to general medical clinics, health, rehabilitation and therapy centers as well as psychotherapeutic clinics are presented. The projects impress with unique architectural designs that are adapted to the respective needs of the patients. At the same time, they emphasize an appropriate balance between the working world and the everyday environment. This creates an impressive overall picture of future-oriented hospital architecture"

The plan calls for the existing district administration building to be extended toward the west. The proposed 6-story new structure will round off the building block, which is somewhat rudimentary at the present time. The entrance of the U-shaped building is central to the neighboring square and will become the new address of the district administration. The new building will align with the eaves of the adjacent development. The green inner courtyard above the underground parking garage provides, together with the existing open space, a recreational area for the employees.
A delicate structure of light colored architectural concrete or natural stone shall define the façade. The vertical support elements are slanted alternately at different angles providing an attractive play within the façade notwithstanding its structural rigidity. Extensive glazed areas, framed by warm grey aluminum or wood window profiles, communicate openness and allow for the maximum possible use of daylight. Together with the solar protection textile fabric a relaxed atmosphere is created - all contributing to the liveliness of the city area.

Residential area “Waldviertel”
A new urban attraction is about to enrich Rodenkirchen, the popular Cologne city district. Excavators have been at work along the busy Bahnstrasse and the unsightly building sections of a long idle former sausage factory are being dismantled. An old shelter sporting concrete walls three meters deep has been demolished gradually. A pleasantly landscaped and mostly car-free residential area is being created. Initially JSWD had been engaged in the development of the urban planning fundamentals for the attractive property, which is centrally located between the green belt and the Rodenkirchen Market Square. At this time, however, the construction work for the initial batch of 270 apartments and a nursery is getting underway. JSWD is working on this project on behalf of Bauwens and Convalor Projektpartner GmbH.

The jury praised the winning design’s urban planning which respects the historical visual axes and provides a new conciseness to the urban space. The concept developed meaningfully from the existing buildings and formed an integral part of the entire theater complex. The JSWD design provides a square, glass cube that is placed at the base of the playhouse, which adds to the existing height. Visitors are led from the main entrance through a sculptural staircase past the box office and cloakroom to the studio and on to the main stage. The two stages and rehearsal rooms are stacked on top of one another.

The architectural concept and the ensuing planning of the new healthcare buildings as well as the required reconstruction and rehabilitation work fell on the planning consortium of HDR, tsj architekten, sander.hofrichter architekten and JSWD. Olaf Drehsen of JSWD Architekten is the authorized representative of this planning consortium.

“Best address of Bonn”
- this is the slogan of the project developer Art-Invest. On 14th of June 2019 the foundation stone of the new office complex has been layed. The focus of the design of JSWD is on high-end attractive architecture, that also offers urban and functional quality. Three office buildings of differing elevations, all designed with pentagonal floor plans, will in future surround the new municipal square. The high point with 28 floors a tower with more than 100 meters height.
The completion of the inner-city landmark is scheduled for 2022.

Following the demolition of an existing building in the city center of Brühl, earth moving is now underway.
The structural work for the extension building including the integrated local district library is scheduled to start this summer directly adjacent the heritage-protected old structure. The adjacent Janshof is also scheduled for redesign. Back in 2017, JSWD Architekten had been awarded first prize in the City of Brühl’s competition. The scheduled new construction will preserve the historical cubature of the traditional city hall while developing from there a local style more or less autonomous building volume consisting of three tightly integrated structures.

According to designs submitted by JSWD Architekten, a new urban neigborhood, called “Cube Factory 577”, is underway at the site of the former railroad repair facility at Leverkusen-Opladen.
The design calls for the revitalization of the former repair facility to enhance the development of student and general housing as well as for office use, retail shops and catering establishments at a campus. The central square at the new neighborhood will grow into the attraction for all users.
Additional plans call for various sporting facilities and a new parking garage at the new 21,500 m2 property directly adjacent to campus of the Technical University [TH] Cologne CUBE Real Estate has invested approximately € 88,000,000 in this project.
A recent demolition party marked the start of the construction project. Certain segments of the facades and the roof construction, however, will be left intact. Project completion is scheduled for 2021.

The construction of a pioneering design bus maintenance depot for around 200 vehicles is underway at the approximately 36 hectares piece of land in the Mosach area of Munich. The surrounding area is characterized by the wide thoroughfare of the Georg Brauchle Ring. The objective of the approximately 25 m high office building with the integrated high-rise parking garage is to shield the interior from noise pollution. The new rectangular large-scale design blends well into the surrounding predominantly orthogonal and large-scale structures.
The six-storey new construction along the road runs parallel to the industrial buildings and maneuvering areas of the bus maintenance depot. The hall-like widening of the northwestern corner of the building is the architectural highlight and serves as the address for the new office building. The plan calls for the administrative offices of the bus maintenance depot to be housed on the first and second upper levels. Additional office space above may be made available to third-party tenants. Inside atria and vertical service/ access areas provide structure to the building. Grass will be planted on all roof areas.
The 400 m long scale-like facade “decelerates” the elongated structure. Depending on utilization, the individual building sections will have various facade types of a highly recognizable “family of facades”. For example, the office facade is characterized by diagonally arranged anodized aluminum window elements of various dimensions, which are diagonally offset. The floor-level windows ensure maximum daylight in the interior. Uniformly anodized aluminum frames and the continuous metal ledges reinforce the overall design principle.

On 10th of January 2019 the foundation stone of the “Hall 1plus” of the refurbishment of the Exhibition and Convention Center of Cologne has been layed.
JSWD won the competition in 2016. In its effort to attain sustainability, “koelnmesse” calls for an investment of approximately 700 million euros between now and the year 2030. For one, the plans call for the multi-functional “CONFEX-Hall” for exhibitions, conventions and corporate events and an intelligent east-west terminal that links all exhibition areas. Furthermore, a new distinct “Entrance East” will be added to the exhibition complex. The design submitted by JSWD convinced due to its well-thought out organization and rearrangement of the complex, both existing and new pattern of use and developmental structures, which brings the joint flexible use of exhibition halls within the realm of possibilities.

By purchasing the long vacant department store in 2014, the City of Cologne assumed a key role in the effort to advance the pending rehabilitation of the city center of Porz.
The Urban Development Corporation moderne stadt had been given the mandate for the creation of a feasibility study, which was being prepared in collaboration with JSWD Architekten. The generally favored concept provided for the demolition of the department store in the pedestrian zone and the urban redesign of the city center by adding three new structures. The interrelationships of the walking public and desired visibility links will be clearly structured in future and will bring to fruition novel retail concepts for the ground floor areas. Apartments are projected for the upper levels. At this time, JSWD is working on the plans for what is known as “Building 1”. Construction is scheduled to get underway during the remainder of 2019.

Following the inauguration of the Mall adjoining the pedestrian zone toward the principal train station, the adjoining bus terminal has now started operations.
It is designed for 35 bus lines to converge at the newly structured transfer point of the ÖPNV. The principal developers, the WSW, estimate up to 65,000 passengers will use the bus terminal daily. It is estimated that approximately one third of them will transfer to other bus lines, the suspension monorail or the German railroad.
The bus terminal represents the final component of the urban redesign and the structural design of the overall railroad station area. The entire area has been enriched by an attractive urban addition in the city center, a concept developed and realized by JSWD.

JSWD has been working on behalf of Art-Invest on the construction of a new hotel within the Domestic area of the Konrad Adenauer Airport near Cologne.
The pentagonal base design and the facade somehow borrow from the architectural styling of the terminal built in 1970 by Prof. Schneider v. Esleben; the current design, however, stops short of copying it. Approximately 250 guest rooms are distributed across four building levels. The lobby, a restaurant and the roof terrace are situated on the fifth floor. The upper levels permit direct view toward the activities on the runway and tarmac.
The inauguration of this hotel, which is part of the Marriott Group, is projected for 2021.

The layout of the Project-Campus Bad Friedrichshall is simiar to giant petals being placed in the distinct topography of the landscape.
Notwithstanding the solitary impression the individual structures convey, they are positioned to encircle a common central green area. Staggered to resemble a terrace, the parking garage levels - some of which open toward the valley - are the base for the high-rise structures.
The positioning of the buildings with their rounded corners results in typical reception bays - each one destined to serve a specific purpose viz. as main entrance, service access or staff entrance - and each is assigned unmistakable and attractive priorities. The main entrance provides access to the conference facilities and the employee cafeteria. The current plans call for the realization of the first construction phase (approx. 3,000 jobs) of the state of the art campus toward the middle of the next decade.

The project just was awarded with the plantin certificate of the German Sustainable Building Council e.V [DGNB].
The Europe Plaza office and business complex is situated almost opposite the "Library of the 21st Century" in the Stuttgart 21 redeveloped quarter. Following a three-stage competition in 2008, the judges voted for the design by JSWD Architects.
A lively city quarter characterized by trade and catering sections as well as freely customizable office space in the upper floors will be created here. A courtyard across two levels forms the core of the building. At "Stockholmer Platz" and opposite "Londoner Straße" the volume of the building in the lower two floors is reduced.

Rising to 28 floors, the high point of the building ensemble designed by JSWD Architekten is almost as high as the neighboring “Lange Eugen” [Tall Eugene], the former House of Representatives, which reaches to 114 m.
With this, the new tower ranks number three in the hierarchy of Bonn’s high-rise buildings. At the top of the list is the Post Tower (Helmut Jahn) at 163 m.
Three office buildings of differing elevations, all designed with pentagonal floor plans, will in future surround the new municipal square. The building ensemble blends in well with the urban environment.
The inner-city landmark of the former “Bonn Center” dating back to the 1960s, had been demolished as far back as March of 2017. The structural work is scheduled to begin in early 2019. Meanwhile, the preparation of the 12 m deep excavation is being prepared. The completion is scheduled for 2021. The German Postbank will be the principal tenant of the 40,000 m2 floor space.

At the ground level, an integral artistic concept forms the corners of the two facing buildings.
The artist Annette Sauermann designed a light installation, which on the one hand symbolizes the shared identity of the two institutes but at the same time their independence. With this in mind, white rounded lines on black background characterize the light module of the IPT while straight perspective red lines on white make up that of the ILT. Using computer-controlled input of different impulses, the light lines (LED) symbolize the internal activities of the institutes in abstract form.

Topics such as current trends in residential construction in view of needs-oriented and sustainable urban development were discussed at the round-table discussion, which had been initiated by the BAUMEISTER editorial board and moderated by the editor-in-chief Alexander Gutzmer.
JSWD staff, representatives of the “Lebensraum Ziegel” [Living Environment Brick] and a number of guests had been prompted by the BAUMEISTER Editorial Board to debate the “Urban Planning Cultural Initiative”. Furthermore, the utilization of brick in multi-level residential buildings and the desire for improved interplay of material quality and brick products in facade and roof designs were discussed.#

At the “Museum of Silence” in Berlin, a new addition is being celebrated today: The model presented features the “Room of Silence” as had been realized previously at the Forum Q2 of the ThyssenKrupp Quarters in Essen.
The two architectural firms JSWD Architekten of Cologne and Chaix & Morel et Associés of Paris had the idea of the entrepreneur campus conceived and realized for this thought provoking location. In the seven meter high sparsely illuminated room, the suspended cube beckons the visitor opening up the view into its colorfully illuminated interior and inside walls lined with spliced titanium shingles.
The “Museum of Silence” represents a private initiative by the artist Nikolai Marakov. In addition to his own large-format art representing vague cloud and landscape fragments, there is a permanent exhibition of models by additional architects - among them Volker Staab and Sergei Tchoban.

District municipal complex Rodenkirchen, Germany
Competition together with RMP landscape architects, Bonn
Following an initial urban planning process in 2008, the architectural design and open space planning competition for the new structure to replace the district municipal complex Rodenkirchen had been released in 2017 and was recently decided.
The design submitted by JSWD provides for a distinct inviting principal structure for the town hall square [Rathausplatz], which is also up for redesign. A powerful urban area with enviable location value has been growing in the historic center of the southern suburb. In addition to the Maternusplatz, which was welcomed by the public, another appealing meeting venue is being created in the center of Rodenkirchen. An attractive alley will in future provide direct access to the nearby Rhine waterfront.
The compact structure follows the typology of the surrounding arcade houses. The glassed-in foyer of the city hall, which is designed fully in compliance for handicap access, opens toward the pedestrian only square. Visitors will find it easy to identify the welcome desk, reception area and the vertically displayed building occupancy information. A generous staircase leads to the “Belle Etage” where the council chambers and the foyer facing the square are located.
The shell of the business center close to the Vienna Main Railroad Station is completed.
Now it was time to proceed with the "topping out ceremony” (Dachgleiche) meaning the reinforced concrete cover for the highest of the three towers of "The Icon Vienna" had been poured.
The design by JSWD originated at the International Architectural Design Competition in partnership with BEHF Architects of Vienna. Three towers in the form of smooth rocks, each rising to a different height, are linked at the base by a covered shopping arcade, which gives the new urban quarter its distinct character. The public shopping arcade accommodates and channels the visitors thus adopting a steering function between the First Campus, the Belvedere Quartier and the new railroad station.

The plans call for a globally unique permanent Wallpaper Collection at the Brüder-Grimm Square at the Kassel MuseumQuarter. The design submitted by JSWD Architekten was awarded the 2nd prize.
The proposed new structure is destined to become the distinguishing structure at the square periphery. The adjacent heritage-protected Torwache will be integrated into the museum, but will nevertheless remain the independent principal feature toward the Wilhelmshöher Allee. The staircase at the connecting structure, which dates back to the 1950s, will act as the link. Deliberate material selection and formal simplicity make it possible to connect two solitary buildings into an impressive whole.

The portfolio of JSWD Architekten of Cologne reveals a wide range of diverse construction projects. Many projects have resulted from successful participation in competitions. We take pleasure in supporting construction projects from very large to very small. The projects vary in magnitude, focus and client. It is nevertheless a common thread that runs through most of the already completed projects and those now underway: particular attention to the exterior, which is meant to be not merely a special attention getter for the onlooker, but should also tell the story of the structure and its owner. In addition to the ties to the locale, which are considered important, the focus is above all on building utilization and the philosophy of the client. The façades move the interior outward, but relate to the environment equally. The “skin” of a building by JSWD is not fashionable. Rather it strives toward civil engineering quality and design sustainability. The inherent design quality, resulting from the combination of conceptual clarity and the conservative use of formal means, has frequently found favor in the rest of Europe. Increasingly the firm JSWD Architekten has undertaken planning and execution of projects beyond Germany. With the display of schematic views of sectional building shells the current exhibit portrays important JSWD Architekten projects spanning the entire spectrum - in other words, JSWD close up!

"The Cologne architecture firm JSWD demonstrates the long-term benefits of an international presence. JSWD Architekten are currently involved in major projects in Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria, in some cases with European partners. An understanding of building quality, urban design, and competence in the field of sustainable construction are always central aspects of these. JSWD are involved in a wide range of building projects—from a school to a research institute, from a residential building to a museum—and each project is conceived from scratch. “Architecture and urban development have to reflect diversity”—this credo underpins the designs by JSWD. They have shown on many occasions that they are not afraid of size, nor do they have any reserve about designing the smallest of details within their particular context. The common feature of all their work is the search for homogeneity with regard to the building volume, form, materials, and color. This harmonious architecture by JSWD is therefore multifaceted and coherent at the same time."
